Connect your domain

Add one DNS record where your domain's DNS is managed. Some providers add it for you in one click; for the rest, here are the steps.

On this page

Connecting your domain takes one DNS record, a CNAME, added where your domain's DNS is managed. The Domain page shows the record with your own Value and the steps for your provider; this article has the same steps for every provider Ovante knows.

Before you start

Add your domain first: open Settings → Domain, type the address in Subdomain and click Add domain. See Use your own domain.

Connect in one click

Some providers, such as GoDaddy, can add the record for you. The page then shows Connect with and the provider's name.

  1. 1
    Click Connect with GoDaddy.
  2. 2
Sign in at GoDaddy and approve the change.
  3. 3
GoDaddy sends you back to the Domain page, and Ovante looks for the record right away.

To add the record by hand instead, click Add it myself.

Add the record yourself

The record looks like this, with your own Value:

TypeNameValue
CNAMEeventsk7m2q9xf3ab4.ovantedns.com
  • In the Name field, type only events, or whatever comes before your domain. Most providers add the rest themselves.
  • If there's already a record at that name, delete it first. A CNAME can't share its name.
  • Copy the Value from your Domain page. It's different for every domain.
  • Leave TTL at the provider's default.

On the Domain page, Show steps has the steps for your provider, and Copy instructions copies the record and the steps for whoever manages your domain. After you save the record, Check now looks for it right away.

Find where your DNS is managed

Ovante usually works this out and names your provider on the Domain page. If it can't, look up your domain at lookup.icann.org and check its name servers. Those decide where you edit DNS, and they aren't always where you bought the domain: a domain bought at GoDaddy but using Cloudflare's name servers is edited at Cloudflare.

Domains hosted by Chabad.org

Many Chabad houses run their website on Chabad.org's platform, and Chabad.org manages those domains' DNS. Their web team adds the record for you, and the Domain page shows a request to send them instead of the record.

If you bought the domain somewhere else, such as Squarespace or GoDaddy, that account can still show a DNS page. A record you add there won't work while the domain's nameservers point to Chabad.org (ns1.chabadonline.com and ns2.chabadonline.com), because the internet reads Chabad.org's DNS instead. Send the request below rather than adding the record yourself.

  1. 1
On the Domain page, click Copy request. It holds your record and asks for it to be set to DNS only.
  2. 2
Send it to the Chabad.org web team, through the support channel you use for your website.
  3. 3
When they reply that it's done, open the Domain page. Ovante finds the record within a few minutes.

The request reads like this, with your own Value:

Note

Hi, please add this DNS record for yourdomain.org: CNAME, name "events", value "k7m2q9xf3ab4.ovantedns.com", DNS only (not proxied). It connects our event pages on Ovante. Thank you.

There's no one-click Connect for these domains: Chabad.org keeps them in its own account, so it would ask you to sign in to an account you don't have.

A whole domain, like yourgala.org

Ovante connects subdomains. If you bought a domain only for your events, connect www.yourgala.org, then turn on forwarding from yourgala.org to it at your registrar. GoDaddy (Domain Settings, then DNS, then Forwarding) and Cloudflare (a Redirect Rule) forward secure https links. Some registrars' free forwarding can't, so visitors who type https://yourgala.org may see a security warning.
