How paid requests are charged
A paid request holds the buyer's card at checkout and charges it only when you approve. If the hold has lapsed, Ovante charges the card the buyer saved; if that fails, the buyer gets a link to pay.
On this page
A paid request doesn't charge the buyer at checkout. Stripe places a hold on the card for the order's total, and Ovante charges it only when you approve. If you decline, the hold is released and the buyer pays nothing.
At checkout
- The buyer enters a card and Stripe holds the total. Nothing is charged.
- The card is saved with the request, so Ovante can still charge it if the hold runs out before you decide.
- On the Orders page the total reads as held, and the order is Pending approval. The buyer's ticket page says the amount is held and charged only if you approve.
When you approve
- 1The hold is still alive. Ovante charges it. The order becomes Paid and the buyer gets their tickets.
- 2The hold has lapsed. Card holds don't last forever; the order drawer shows "Hold ends" with a date, or "Hold lapsed". Approving then charges the card the buyer saved at checkout.
- 3That charge fails. The card is declined, or the bank wants the buyer present to confirm. The order becomes Awaiting payment and the buyer gets a "Payment needed" email with a button to pay. This email goes even if you turned emails off, since without it the buyer can't pay.
The buyer pays on their ticket page and gets their tickets. If they don't pay in time, the request expires. Ovante checks for a seat again when they pay, and refunds the payment if the event filled up in the meantime.
When it closes without a charge
| What happened | What the buyer sees |
|---|---|
| You declined | The hold is released. They get the decline email, with your note, unless you turned emails off. |
| The buyer cancelled | They used Cancel request on their ticket page. The hold is released and the drawer says "Withdrawn by the buyer". |
| The event ended first | The request expires, the hold is released, and they get an email saying so. |
Fees
On Free, Ovante's fee is taken when the hold is charged. A released hold costs you nothing.
The rules behind this page
- When
- A buyer places a paid request
- Then
- Ovante holds the amount on their card and charges nothing until you decide. The card is saved too, in case the hold runs out first.
- When
- You approve a paid request
- Then
- Ovante captures the hold, or charges the saved card if the hold has run out. If that charge fails, the order becomes Awaiting payment and the buyer gets a link to pay, even if you chose not to email them.
- When
- An approved request stays Awaiting payment
- Then
- If the buyer doesn't pay on their link before it runs out, Ovante expires the request and the seat is no longer theirs. A payment that went through before then is kept, and the order completes.
- When
- You decline a request, or the buyer cancels it
- Then
- Ovante releases any card hold and the order shows Declined; the drawer says whether it was declined, expired or withdrawn. The buyer gets an email unless you turned it off or they cancelled it themselves.
- When
- An event ends with a request still open
- Then
- Within the hour Ovante expires each request placed before the end, releases its card hold and emails the buyer. A request placed after the end waits for you.
Good to know
- PayArc can't hold a card, so approval tickets work with Stripe only.
- A request never uses a member's saved cards, and the card saved with a request doesn't join their saved cards.
