When members change or cancel
Members switch tiers and cancel card or free memberships themselves. Offline dues, prepaid tiers moving to cheaper ones, and moves to a free tier stay with you.
On this page
Members change tiers from Change tier on their membership page, and cancel from Cancel membership (or Leave membership for a free tier). What they can do online depends on how they pay; anything else they ask you, and you make the change.
Changing tiers
Change tier opens the tiers drawer. Each tier the member can reach online reads Upgrade to, Downgrade to or Switch to and the tier's name; their own reads Current tier; the rest say Not available online. A tier is higher when it costs more over a year, and lifetime is highest. The next page shows what's Due today before anything changes.
| They hold | They pick | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Free or complimentary | A free tier | The tier changes. Nothing to pay. |
| Free or complimentary | Monthly or yearly | A new card subscription. |
| Free or complimentary | One-time or lifetime | One payment at the tier's price. |
| Monthly or yearly by card | Another monthly or yearly tier | Stripe prorates. An upgrade is charged now; a downgrade leaves credit on the next payment. |
| Monthly or yearly by card | A higher one-time or lifetime tier | One payment, less the unused part of the current period. |
| One-time by card | A higher one-time or lifetime tier | One payment, less the unused part of the term. |
Everything else goes through you: dues you recorded by hand, a prepaid tier to a cheaper one, a paid tier to a free one, and any member whose status is Payment due. Those members reply to an email from your org, and you make the change.
A change sends the Tier upgrade email, or Tier downgrade for a tier that costs less.
- When
- A member changes tier from their membership page
- Then
- A monthly or yearly card membership switches at once: an upgrade charges the difference now or not at all, and a downgrade leaves credit. Dues paid offline, a move to a cheaper prepaid tier, and a move to a free tier go through you.
Cancelling
Cancel membership shows up for a monthly or yearly card membership, and Leave membership for a free one. Both open a page that says when access ends and lists what goes with it: the member price, the tier's perks, and members-only events with a count of those coming up. Keep membership is the main button.
- A card membership stays until the end of the period they paid for, and the card isn't charged again. The member can Resume membership until then.
- A free membership ends at once.
Cancelling sends the Cancellation email. In the Members tab, a canceled card membership reads Ending until its period runs out.
What stays with you
- One-time, lifetime, recorded and complimentary memberships can't be canceled by the member. You end them from the member's sheet. See Add a member by hand.
- You can't move a member to another tier from the member's sheet. To change a recorded or complimentary member's tier, end the membership and add them again on the new tier.
- Refunds of card dues are made in your Stripe dashboard.
