Dues, renewals and failed payments

Card dues go to your own Stripe account. Monthly and yearly tiers renew on their own; every other membership ends on its date, after a reminder.

On this page

Card dues are charged on your org's own Stripe account, the same way ticket payments are. Monthly and yearly tiers renew by card until the member cancels. Everything else, a one-time payment, dues you recorded by hand, a complimentary membership with an end date, ends on its end date.

Where the money goes

  • Dues land in your Stripe account and pay out on your Stripe schedule.
  • On Free, Ovante keeps 5% of every card payment for dues, renewals included. On Pro it keeps nothing. Each renewal uses the plan your org is on the day Stripe bills it.
  • Dues you record by hand pay no Ovante fee.
  • Refunds of dues are made in your Stripe dashboard, not in Ovante.
When
A member pays dues by card
Then
On Free, Ovante takes 5%; on Pro, nothing. Each renewal follows the plan your org is on when Stripe drafts it, and dues you record yourself carry no fee.

How each tier renews

BillingRenewsEnds
Monthly, YearlyBy card, every periodWhen the member cancels, you cancel, or Stripe stops retrying a failed charge
One payment for a set timeWhen the member pays again from Renew on their dashboardOn its end date
LifetimeNever needs toOnly if you end it
Recorded by hand or complimentaryWhen you record another paymentOn the end date you set, if any

Before a membership that doesn't renew by card reaches its end date, Ovante sends the member the Renewal reminder email. On the end date, the membership ends and the member loses member prices and members-only events.

When a card renewal fails

  1. 1
Stripe declines the renewal. The member's status turns Payment due and they get the Payment failed email.
  2. 2
Stripe tries the card again over the next few days. The member keeps their membership meanwhile, and their dashboard asks them to add a new card and make it the default.
  3. 3
When a retry succeeds, the status goes back to Active. If Stripe gives up and cancels the subscription, the membership ends.

How many times Stripe retries, and what it does after the last try, follow your Stripe account's settings.

When
A membership reaches its end date
Then
Dues you recorded, a comp and a one-time card payment stop counting that day. A monthly or yearly card membership keeps counting while Stripe renews it.
When
A card renewal fails
Then
The membership shows Payment due and the member keeps access while Stripe retries. Ovante emails the member to update their card.
When
A membership that doesn't renew by itself nears its end date
Then
Ovante emails the member a renewal reminder, once. Monthly and yearly card memberships renew on their own and get none.

Good to know

  • You can edit the Renewal reminder, Payment failed and other member emails under Memberships → Tiers and perks → Member emails. Saving changes needs Pro. See Member and host emails.
  • A member who changed cards adds the new one from their dashboard. See Your saved cards.
